NIT's 20th Anniversary Celebration

The NIT celebrates its 20th anniversary. On 29 June 2018, all companions are invited to join the celebrations - alumni, students, sponsors, staff, partners from economics, science and politics. In a ceremony, we look back with contemporary witnesses from the past and take a look into the future with NIT Managing Director Verena Fritzsche.

Afterwards, guests and the general public are welcome to get to know the NIT with lectures on digitization, presentations of start-ups and food from all over the world. One highlight is the foundation of the association commuNITy e. V. In the evening we will have a big barbecue with live music and special acts.

High-quality, easy-to-use and inexpensive: Today we talk a lot about frugal innovations so far mostly in connection with emerging markets such as India. But there is also an increasing number of companies in industrialized nations such as Germany that sell high-quality products with a lower range of functions at a reasonable price. This raises the question of whether our existing innovation paradigm is still applicable or if it is time to adapt our way of thinking.


Utilizing Prosthetic Arms: How an App and a Glove can help Users, Pitch (ENG)

Prosthetic patients often struggle with being able to fully utilize their bionic limb. A lack of at-home support fuels frustration and hinders performance. NIT students Cherisa Nicholls and Melissa Gile designed a prosthetic glove, which, paired with a specifically designed gaming app, helps users to improve their experience.


Creative Technologist – Why Technology and Creativity are the perfect Match for Innovations, Keynote (ENG)

The Metal and Electrical Industry is based on a very high technological degree. Therefore the effects of the digital structural change have a huge impact on its products and services on the international markets. But also the employees and their jobs will change: most duties and requirements will need to be adapted fast and continuously according to alternating customer demands. In this context the employer association NORDMETALL and its companies talk about "Work 4.0" and emphasize that lifelong learning especially today is a natural part of both personal and in-plant education and development.

Today Synchrotron research has become an integral part of our daily life. It helps to answer various questions in the fields of food - as well as in the chemical-, pharma- and cosmetics-industry. Diverse materials can be examined and quality testing procedures can be improved. But in the end it is all about the money. By using less time and sample volume the Synchrotron is highly time-cost effective. Dr. Sabine Jähmlich from DESY explains the advantages of working with a particle accelerator.  



How to Park an Airplane, Pitch (ENG)

How to park an airplane? It‘s not that easy! Airplanes are regularly damaged by accidental collisions during maintenance. This costs the industry millions. The start-up Flugilo and their mobile parking sensors promise a solution to this problem.

Digital City: How data-driven Services shape Hamburg's Future, Keynote (ENG)

What will the city of the future look like? The CityScienceLab at the HafenCity University is trying to answer this question. This visionary project focuses on the development of digital tools for citizen participation in the context of urban development. Holger Prang shows what lies ahead and explains which requirements an urban metropolis will have to meet.

Akademische Weiterbildung im digitalen Zeitalter, Keynote (GER)

Postgraduate training will play a central role for German universities in the upcoming years. Therefore they have to develop new didactic approaches. It is obvious that digitalization will play a central role in this context. In his lecture Jörg Philipp Terhechte illustrates these developments.


577 students have studied at the NIT so far.


About 30 % of our students have been women.


Most of our students have come from Germany, Mexico and China.


They've made it: In 2001 the first NIT Class graduated. The students spent two years studying for their degrees - a Master's in Technology Management at the NIT and at the same time an MSc at the TUHH. Click through the years.


The wall of the NIT foyer was designed by the Austrian concept artist Peter Friedl.


98% of our students completed their studies successfully.


Prof. Dr. Michael Rosemann from our flying faculty has the longest journey to the NIT. A flight from his home town Brisbane to Hamburg takes more than 20 hours.

The NIT has been known for international education and intercultural exchange. We maintain an active, international network with our students, alumni, lecturers and partners. So far, the NIT has been a home to students from 63 different countries.

The NIT building is 23 m high.


In 2017, the NIT residents used 1870 washing coins to wash their clothes.


Every year, the NIT Welcome Office accepts more than 1800 packages for its students.
